Description of your experience

Since 1911, the National Museum of Contemporary Art of Chiado has been installed in the old São Francisco Da Cidade convent, a building marked by the earthquake of 1755 and a fire in 1988, before its reopening in 1994.

Created following the split of the former National Museum of Fine Arts, he retained the works produced after 1850, while the National Museum of Ancient Art presents those before that date.

The collection covers the period from 1850 to 1975 and presents paintings, sculptures and emblematic drawings. Visitors can discover major works ranging from romanticism and symbolism of the 19th century to modernism and conceptual art of the 20th century.

The museum thus offers a rich and varied panorama of Portuguese and international artistic evolution, in a unique historical framework.
